Stunned

I was going to tell you all about my leisurely day at a spa yesterday, but two things have happened that have seriously dampened my mood:

1 - Jacob Zuma's charges have been dismissed
2 - Richard Hammond (one of the presenters of my beloved Top Gear) is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash while shooting an episode for the series.

Bleh. No more to say today.

First Steve Irwin, now Richard Hammond. This is a lousy blow to my very limited viewing pleasure on DSTV.

Maybe it was caused by a sting ray attack?

He was driving a dragster, travelling at 300mph when he crashed BBC.

*Sigh* what people have to do for television entertainment these days...

Wezzo, rocket - seems like all the good ones are going, eh? Who's next?

O-D - me too on both accounts, buddy. But the one hope I have regarding JZ is that he'll get himself into another mess from which he just can't extricate himself. Third time lucky, perhaps?

Why is everyone so upset about JZ getting off, does no one respect the SA judicial system any more? The man was found not guilty, leave him be. If he becomes President that's another story...

Whatever would Top Gear be without Hammond? (stuck in first gear?)Hope that the news that his condition is improving is true.

I haven't really been able to absorb/digest/work out what the impact of the JZ stuff-up actually is or will be.

There is much jubilation on the streets though. Perhaps a populist president is what the country needs in it's second decade of freedom? I don't know. Is there really someone out there who will connect with the will of the people and do a reasonable job?

ee cummings had it right though.

The Hammond and Zuma

Can't we swop them around. Watching Top Gear will now be sad, Who's Clarkson going to pick on.

About the Zuma debacle, the Judge removed the case from the roll. Now thats way different from him being found not guilty. They are able to re-try him, but do the NPA have the political will to do so.

As for President:
- Definitely took bribes ( procedural legal issues aside)
- Raped a woman
- Cheated on his Wife(s)
- Has a std 5 education

Plus lots of other shit we probably don't know.
Lots of people talking about packing up and leaving if he makes president. Know 2 people who actually sent away for immragtion applications forms yesterday, no shit.

I'm an African, proud of it and reckon that we need to be here hands-on to tranform our country, not just pay it lip services. But at which point does it become a futile exercise and is it prudent to desert the sinking ship???

Wezzo, Rev has my sentiments down pat. I have to believe the legal system is fair, so fine, I'll accept he was found acquitted of the charges. On the corruption charges, the trial never took place. I do find it hard to believe that Schaik could be guilty of corruption without JZ being guilty - it takes two to tango, they say...

Wit, as I commented on your blog a while back, I don't know why I don't like JZ. There probably is a huge cultural element to it - I can identify a lot more with where Thabo Mbeki's coming from than with JZ's stance, so it's probably a fear of the unknown. I don't dispute that the vast majority of SA'ns love JZ, but then if you ask the majority of SA'ns what they think of Robert Mugabe, they'll love him too.

Rev - my boyfriend definitely agrees with you - he said there was no way he would ever live in a South Africa under JZ's rule. I took a bet with him, saying JZ would never make it to president, simply because he'd humiliated himself so much that the party would not let him assume the role - he's done too much damage (without being found guilty of either charge, regardless). I'm in such disbelief about the past day's events, that I'm sorry to say I fear he will indeed make the president.
