Small things amuse numb (and yes, probably small) minds

In the midst of ludicrous deadlines and my brain working on autopilot, I have spared my grey matter any unnecessary effort in dreaming up a thought-provoking post for today, and have opted more for a trivial anecdote – although one that kept me smiling for a good portion of the five-hour workshop session I sat in on with a client yesterday.

You see, the top management from the client was assembled in one room, discussing all manner of ambitious plans for the future, and yet my mind’s primary focus was… her shoes. To aid in your visualisation of the scene, I present you with my crude diagram:

The choice of purple for the depiction of the leather uppers is not accidental, I must add. But it was not this that drew my attention – no, it was the rubber elastic bands (yellow on the right foot, red on the left) which inexplicably – yet obviously deliberately – each foot-clad shoe had squeezed itself into.

Why?

Did she not like the clickety-clackety noise they made? Then don’t buy slip-in high heels, for that is part of the reason for their existence!

Did she forget to wash her feet yesterday morning and was embarrassed a slip-on would dangle from her foot, exposing a sordidly filthy sole to the other managers? Then wear closed shoes! (or just wash your feet)

Maybe her feet smell badly in those shoes, so she didn’t want a whiff of stinky to get out – again, don’t wear the shoes, lady!

And let’s not get started on the choice of 2 differently-coloured elastic bands – and those colours being red and yellow against lurid purple shoes – to solve the mysterious problem… I simply can’t wait to see her next ensemble!

I'm finished - that is too funny! Elastic-banding your shoes to your feet?! That's ludicrous - being a self-confessed shoe addict I would have fixated on it, marveling at the madness of it!
No ways - it's too much.

Haha, love your little diagram. Engineers, I tell you!

Dude the diagram is too priceless!
Who could mock a shoe with such elastic? Sacrilege.

Maybe she lost the shoe laces...

I have never worn shoes like that before. Do they flop up and down when you walk? Maybe she doesn't like that? or Maybe they keep falling off, cos her feet are too big?

Tell me, would it be comfortable, wouldn't the elastic cut off blood circulation to your toes?

The colors, either they where the only elastics she could find, or she thought it was cool.

Benny - I'm STILL laughing about it

martin - aint no engineers here, buddy :) and that glorious image was constructed in nothing more sophisticated that MS Paint... with my right hand (and I'm left-handed. Seriously.)

peas - thanks dude.

duzzie - good point! She was probably losing blood to her toes! Maybe, just maybe, she has one of those weird fantasies to lose a limb (I saw this on CSI, so it's true - you do get such people) and wear a prosthetic!

ctc - you might buy them, the rest of the world, on the other hand, will give the fad a skip :)

if you had spent more time focussed on her face, you would have seen her specs secured to the bridge of her nose with bubble gum (sweaty feet = sweaty face.....nothin more irritating thn specs sliding down )

now that is sheer class. i've never even thought of doing that! what else was she wearing?

Urk - she was so sweaty that the specs had slipped right off :) Perhaps her contacts were misty?

Zuzula - sounds like you could have a genuine use for elasticated slip-on heels. Do share! As I recall (and it's not a great recollection, what with my being so absorbed with her feet) it was a knee-length black dress, and she was enshrouded by a camel-coloured pashmina.

i'm no fashionista, but aren't pashminas so last season? probably secured that to her dress 3 years ago with velcro, and couldnt get it off....come to think of it, the shoes have prob not been removed for 3 years either. they started off being black, but are now covered in layers of purple toe jam

She obviously had 2 things she needed to remember and had an elastic band for each one.
People normally put these around the wrists though, but hey, each to his/her own.

Nooo!!!!
Thats horrid!

Welcome back Ant, i am terribly jealous of your Moz trip! Where are the photo's?

I just wouldn't be able to take someone seriously if they were wearing those...just couldn't. Did she catch you staring?

Urk - I've never done pashmina's, so I can't comment. Interestingly, at one point she complained it was swelteringly hot and yet did not remove the pashmina - maybe your velcro theory is not that far off...

Rev - ever the genius in this neck of the woods, aren't you?

Billy - hello there! Moz photo's to be put up soon - in fact, may do so tomorrow. Already trying to wangle our company into doing a team getaway in Moz next year!

Jam - she caught me a number of times. She didn't look embarrassed at all, but rather, confused as to why they would be intriguing me so much.

Aha! I'm rich - I've finally found a use for the entire drawer of elastic bands I have in my office. Working name: Shoe-lastic. Patent pending!
