Finally… the holiday pics

First up, a moment to brag: I’ve just been promoted at work! Hopefully, along with the huge load of additional responsibility, comes a big fat pay increase (I’ve yet to see the offer).

Secondly, the holiday photos. I was hoping to get hold of everyone else’s before putting things up here because there’s bound to be far better pics than mine floating around, but it seems that’s going to be far too long a wait. So here’s a brief Ant tour of Mozambique (bloody blogger won't let me put up more photo's than these):

Maputo is much like a run-down Joburg CBD by the sea…

The towns have colourful markets (mercado) where you get to haggle with the locals over their opportunistically inflated prices (“Quanto custa? Caro! Caro!”) and gag on the smell of rotting fish.

For R160 a night (Baobab Lodge, Vilanculos), you get to sleep in a chalet that boasts views like this every morning…

The Mozambican government is making the islands off Vilanculos (like this one, Bazaruto) an exclusive holiday getaway with only upmarket accommodation available. Thankfully, transport by dhow to these islands is so dodgy (and hence cheap) that riff-raff like us could still afford day visits to these beautiful islands with their sublime views.

In Barra, the coconut palm-riddled playground of Gautengers fed up with Christmas in Cape Town, the sky was having another orgasm.

Extreme jealousy is.... ARGH!
Gorgeous pics. I love Maputo, in all its dodginess. And I love your comment for that last pic, great new way to regard sunsets!

Gautengers sick of Cape Town? More like Capetonians sick of the Vaalies!. I have been imposed upon for the last 5 years, and have now decided stop being a victim and to become an imposer myself. Watch out Plett, here comes URK from CT!!

Ah Ant!
I spent many happy days lounging on Benguerra Island (just south of Bazaruto)
Moz is a great place to go for a good tan and vaca. Glad you liked it.
Did you get out to the 7mile reef? great for snorkelling.
Also the entire Island chain is a national park. usually costs $10 to go into the area. lucky to get away without paying.

Champs - you're going to have to get up there to see it for yourself... pictures don't do it justice!

ctc - you're lucky your holiday is still coming - I'm going to have to wait a while before getting the chance to go again! Sigh! There are never wnough leave days allotted to employees in the year, are there?

urk - i knew that comment would seriously grate some readers! those of us who are sick of cape town at christmas will go elsewhere. (many gautjies won't make that list and will continue to pester you). happy pletting!

insane - 7 mile reef? not sure... does it extend to the south part of bazaruto? (i joined the others later, was too mesmerised by the dunes, so may have missed some info). i was upset by the fact that we went to Paindane to snorkel too (which my guidebook tells me is the best reef on the Eastern coast of Africa) but there were so many jellyfish in the water (around spring tide) that we couldn't go in. And we did pay the $10, it was included in our dhow fare.

thats a bit of a bitch.
7 mile is on the ocean side of south east from baza.
they screwed you over in terms of the snorkelling. next time, let me know well in advance when you're going and i'll play tourguide.

First up. Bloody well done and as always its about bloody time. Remember this post of yours earlier in the year. I told you it work out! you also said you loved me - but that's another tale!

Secondly, great pics & the jealousy meter has ratcheted up a few notches again. Damn you for insisting on rubbing it in.

insane - I may just take you up on that offer!

wit - given that I haven't done any work of great significance this year, I'm rather astounded at how fast the progression happened. As for loving you, well, I love your work, man. You're fabulous! Hope the jealousy will inspire you to take a suitably gorgeous holiday when you can spare the time :)

Oh god! I'm consumed by jealousy! Wonder what a flight from Edinburgh to Moz would set me back?

Looks like the most amazing place!
